Before she was a filmmaker, director Sofia Coppola was a fixture in the fashion world. From an early age, her upbringing as Hollywood royalty regularly brought her into contact with celebrities from every walk of life. In her teen years, when most of us were driving around our hometowns looking to get into a little trouble, young Sofia was tearing it up in New York City with the upstart mavericks of the art scene alongside other celebrity offspring. She was a socialite and party girl, yes, but she also had something to offer the scene in return, encouraging and promoting emerging designers while cultivating designs of her own. One of her most consequential friendships was with an innovative young man named Marc Jacobs, a Parsons School of Design graduate who would go on to become one of the biggest names in designer fashion.
